  • Hydrate: Hydrate, hydrate and then hydrate some more. You may have come across this piece of advice over and over again and for a very solid reason. This simple truth can’t be stressed enough. You must drink adequate water in the summer months to keep your skin looking youthful and fresh. Dehydration can make it look dull and aged and nobody wants that!

  • Hydrate right: Yes, often we mistake the concept of hydrating ourselves with reaching out for chilled, sugar-filled artificial drinks. These are neither good for your skin nor for your figure. Avoid sodas, aerated drinks and packaged juices completely. Replace these with healthy, natural substitutes like coconut water, salted buttermilk, Mango Panna, refrigerated green tea etc.
  • Use a sunscreen: This summer essential is often overlooked for no good reason. Yes, it can be quite a challenge to find the sunscreen that suits you best but the effort is worth it. For Indian skin, a sunscreen with SPF 20-30 is ideal. Go for gel-based sunscreens if you have oily skin but don’t avoid them altogether. Apply the lotion/gel at least 20 minutes prior to stepping out in the sun.
  • Exercise regularly: Summer is the best time to get into shape and lose those extra pounds accumulated in the colder months. And those efforts at shedding kilos also work wonders for your skin. Exercise aids blood circulation and pumps more oxygen in your body, resulting in revitalised skin. It also helps in regulating skin-significant hormones and preventing free-radical damage.
  • Cleanse, tone and moisturise: The holy trinity must be shown particular respect at this time of the year. You can use a natural cleanser such as rose water or a pack of gram flour and yoghurt. Follow this up with toning which helps keep pores closed and cools the skin. Many of us tend to think that we don’t need to moisturise in the sweaty season but that’s not correct. If you feel that your moisturiser leaves your skin particularly oily, switch to a water-based moisturiser for the summer.
